One day Seminar on
“Role of Modern Universities in the Social Reconstruction”
at Karakoram International University, Gilgit-Baltistan
This was an interactive seminar where lively debates took place in a very cordial environment. Some important and critical topics like recent rise of extremism in educational institutions, living in a multicultural and plural society, rights of minorities and real idea for creation of Pakistan were part of the program. The conclusion both by speakers and participants was that the only way to make society more tolerant and harmonize and to provide more space and opportunities for interaction and dialogue in open and mutually learning environment.
The IRD in collaboration with Karakoram International University, Gilgit-Baltistan conducted one day seminar titled: “Role of Modern Universities in the Social Reconstruction” on 13 September 2017 where the speakers opined that the universities can play a vital role in reshaping societies. The educational institutions may take practical initiatives and steps to resolve the societal and moral issues.
Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan, Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman was the chief guest on this occasion. Addressing a seminar at Karakoram University, the Chief Minister said that the universities have an important role in character-building of students besides leading them to better employment opportunities. Lauding the role of Karakoram International University he said that this university has mandate to work as a Think Tank to guide the people of the region on various local social and other issues. He said that first-ever women university of international standard would be established in Gilgit Baltistan to help female students of the region who are pursuing higher education without any hurdles. He urged the teachers that character-building of the students should be their mission, adding that they should support every student to acquire higher education.
The seminar was also attended by Federal Minister for Kashmir and GB Affairs, Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir. IIU Rector, Dr Masoom Yasinzai, KIU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalil Ahmed, IIU Vice President (Academics) Dr. Muhammad Bashir Khan, Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue Executive Director, Dr. Husnul Amin and other officials of both varsities spoke on this occasion.
Dr Masoom Yasinzai said that the universities may have to play due role in promotion of peace and tolerance in the society and spending on education is the best investment. He termed teachers the most important segment of the society. The teachers could help more than any person in getting rid of challenges of hours. He suggested such activities may be arranged across Gilgit Baltistan.
Dr. Muhammad Bashir Khan, Vice President (Academics) said that academia may be given due respect and priorities in mainstreaming to solve the issues of societies. He added that peace and dialogue are pre-requisites to keep societies prosperous, develop and full of values in this age of globalization.
Dr. Husnul Amin, Executive Director of the Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue said that universities were not only names of buildings but these have to play the highest role in the society in promoting and publishing positive ideas and thoughts. He highlighted six-point spirit in formation of society, which includes;
- research efforts to understand the issues
- solve the problems of culture
- use modern technique and requirements
- cognitive style and problems of society
- role of universities in the civilization
- development of nations
It is the obligation for students and teachers to groom the neglected people of the society, and make them able to take part in healthy discussions, create attitude of thinking and thinking about the society. He added that the universities may now think about their role in promoting social interest in the country and the nation.
Dr. Muhammad Akram Virk, Chairman, Department of Islamic Studies, Government Postgraduate College, Gujranwala said that Quran and teachings of Holy Prophet (SWS) brought change in social life. He highlighted the role of teacher in the society to take a serious approach. He said that Islamic teachings save the humanity and society.
Mr. Sabookh Syed, eminent Journalist, said that the role of social media is important in promotion of peace in the society. In Pakistan more than four million fake box accounts are in use according to PTA and so many numbers of Internet users. Most accounts on social media are fake and they are being used for propaganda. He said how fake material both audio/ video and written content is uploaded on social media to spread hatred in society. He said that the majority of people using Face book are between the ages of 20 to 25 and they are essentially studying at the University or Madrassa. He said that it is necessary that youth should be educated about the positive use of media nad should be made aware about the negative aspects of it as well. He urged the students that if used properly students can promote positive attitude through social media.
Dr Kausar Yasinzai, Senior Professor of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad said how we can prepare ourselves for a healthy society. She commented how population and pollution is giving birth to new problems. She said that awareness of the new investigation in the field of health sciences is very important.
Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, Dean, FSS, KIU, Syed Muzamill Hussain Shah, IRD, Dr. Qaisar Shahzad, Faculty of Islamic Studies, IIU, Mr. Inam Ullah Jan, Lecturer, Department of Politics & I.R, Mr. Masood-ur-Rehman Khattak, Lecturer, Department of Politics & I.R and Dr. Kausar Yasinzai, Chief Gynecologist, PIMS, Islamabad also spoke on the occasion.
