A Seminar on “Role of Lawyers in Safeguarding Human Rights” was held at Muzaffargarh in collaboration with District Bar Association on February 14, 2013. Abdur Rehman Niazi, District Session Judge chaired the Session. Dr. Talib Hussain Sial, Director, IRD gave brief introduction of Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue of IIUI. Thereafter President of the Bar Association Malik Muhammad Junaid Vajdani welcomed the guest speaker Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, Executive Director, IRD and Vice President of International Islamic University, Islamabad and requested him to deliver the lecture.
Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad at the outset referred to the Last Sermon, first declaration on human rights, by Prophet of Islam which is not being followed by Muslims today. Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad critically analyzed the situation of human rights in the Muslim states and under the western democracy. He gave critical appraisal of speeches in favour of human rights and instances of flagrant violations in the nation states and at global level. Further, he appreciated the efforts by lawyers for the cause of human right and rule of law. During Q & A session, candid discussion regarding sensitivity of the society towards the violation of human rights and application of local, national and international laws was held.
In his presidential remarks, Abdur Rehman Niazi thanked the speakers for objective discussions. He remarked on significant position of lawyers in judicial system of any country. He also focused on environment of education and tolerance in provision of basic rights to citizens.
